4 MIN FILM

 4 min film

My 4 min film was about a girl called Jess, who was in a mentally abusive family and one day, it gets too much for her and so she decides to run away. she goes to the woods and it is too far and so she gets lost so has to stay the night. The next morning the policeman finds her and brings her home.

Mother- Casey Weedall

Father- Martin Cunningham

Policeman- Josh Jorgensen

Jess- Freya Whitehouse

Locations, props and costumes

The locations I used for my 4 min short film was the living room in the college, the grass patch next to the car park, the road outside out of college, and the path next to it. The reason i chose these locations was because they were easily accessable, and easy for the kit required and the actors to get to without any hazards or risks. Because of choosing locations so close to college, I was able to film my short film in the space of a day, which made the process a lot easier and less stressful as i could only film close to the end of the deadline for this project. One thing i would have done differently in locations is the front door. When filming that scene, you could see the fact that it was not real. To solve this, i should have zoomed in on the camera more.

As for props, there was not many used in my short film as they were not very needed. I just used shoes, when Jess was tieing them to run away, and a walkie talkie for the police officer when collecting Jess from the woods. The way i got the shoes was from Freya and the walkie talkie was part of the police costume, both of these items were very easily accesible which made it very easy on the behalf. As for costumes, The only thing I used was the police costume which was just from the costume room. Everyone else was just able to use their own clothes and it fit with the film.

Pre Production

The first thing we had to do for this was come up with an idea for what our storyline was going to be based on and have drafted ideas. We then spoke them out with the rest of the class to see how we could improve them and make them better. Once we had a good solid idea, we had to make a storyboard and character breakdowns to visualise how our short film was actually going to look. We then had to make shot lists. This was to help with knowing what types of shots we were doing and how exactly we were going to film it. Before going out on location, we had to do risk assesments for safeguarding and then we were ready to film. The actual process of filming only took a day as everything was pre prepared and ready to go.

Post production

Once I had finished filming, It was then time to start editing, This was done by Casey Weedall. It was then put onto a hard drive and then it was complete.

We then played our films for the class one by one and gave feedback for each others. What was good about mine was the music was fitting and the way it was edited. I could improve on making the story line and characters clearer and easier for the audience to understand.

Evaluation

Overall, I think that my film was a good attempt for a first short film, however there is some things i could have improved on. I could have made my characters a bit more clear on who is who, however this was quite hard as they were all the same age playing different ages. Another thing I could have improved on was when filming the door scene, moving the camera closer or zooming in more so you could not see the fact that it was not a real front door. Some things that were good about my short film was the editing as that was done perfectly to ensure a clear story line , and the sing i chose fit the genre of the film perfectly to show emotion. Another thing that was good on my film was the many different shot types and camera angles that i got for my film. Also, my actors did a great job at their role and most of it took barley any takes.

Documentary

Documentary Production Diary : Pre-Production: We had to start our short documentary project by doing some research. We each researched a short documentary that caught our eye and watched them to see how they were put together. We then learned that there are three types of documentaries: Participatory, observational and expository. We looked into what each of these meant. This was all done in small tasks in groups or pairs over the course of a couple of lessons, whilst we also watched some examples of professional documentaries.  After we had a few lessons learning about documentaries, it was time to start thinking about our own. We first decided what type of documentary we wanted to make (mine was participatory/observational), and then choose a topic we enjoyed, to make it on. My first idea was to do with animals, I was thinking a puppy training class, or a puppies journey during this. However this was difficult as I needed many people's permission, which I failed to get, an...
