Music Video Analysis/ Production Diary

The song we chose for our music video was Love joys ‘Knee deep at the ATP’. The people in my group was Freya Whitehouse, Jack Fowler and Bailey Blyth.

The first thing we had to do for the video was choose the song. This part was quite easy as Freya already had a few songs in mind that we could use. It was out of three songs, mostly by love joy. However the song we chose, we thought would be best fit for the music video style we were doing. The music video inspiration was ‘Him’ by James Marriott. In this music video, there was many different shots put together to fit the speed of that section of the song. So for example, at the beginning of the video it was fast and there was many different shots of random things like birds, buildings, dogs and people all in the area it was filmed. There was then a slower pace to the video where the singing started and then it had different shots of him singing in different places. This continued throughout the song. The video was also filmed on a camcorder which we were going to do however it didn’t turn out how we had hoped so had to use a normal camera.

After we had done this, we had to make a pitch on a PowerPoint about what we had thought about doing, our song idea, filming ideas and the inspiration for the song including dates of filming and contingency plans. We had to present this to Kane and the rest of the class. We would then get feedback and things that we could improve on to get our music video to the best of its ability.

We then came up with dates we will be filming. Our music video took a total of 2 days to film, the first day being the longest. On the first day we first came to college and met up and then walked to the infinity bridge and then shot many things around there.

Styles of music video

The styles of the music videos are dance, performance, narrative, lyric and animation. These differentiate on the type of song that is being performed. The music video type that we did was narrative and performance.

Codes and conventions

Codes and conventions in a music video are the muse en scene, editing, camera, sound and stereotyping. Depending on the style or genre of the music video, these conventions can change.

Music video analysis

Taylor Swift- all to well 10 minute version

This music video as a whole is ten minutes long, so it is quite lengthy compared to a regular music video. This is because it is telling a full story throughout it. The mise en scene and codes and conventions change quite a lot through the music video. For example, at the beginning of the video, the lighting is very high saturated and bright. It is especially shining on the couple that is playing Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal. This is because at the beginning of the video, It is shining a light on the happy and the good times in the relationship, not showing how anything is yet to go wrong, so they are wanting the viewer to feel happy for them through the lighting as it really shows the upbeat nature to it. For the sound, there is a lot of talking in between the music. This is because it is a narrative music video and needs to show whats actually happening, not just through the visuals. When this happens, the sound of the actual song completely cuts off as it gives a more dramatic effect to the voices. At the beginning when everything is happy, their voices are softer and the music is still playing quietly in the background, it gives a more calm effect on the viewer, however as it gets further through the video and everything starts to go wrong, there is more shouting and the audio is completely silenced. In this screenshot, it is one of the bad memories. The clip is suggesting that the music video in general is quite sad and slow. The camera angle is a mid shot of them both, this is because it needed to capture their body language and facial expressions as they are both so important for the story telling aspect. In the background of this shot, it appears they are in a living room, which is showing that it is a narrative about someones life, in this case Taylor's. During this scene, the camera angle does not change, as the most focused-on thing, is the way they are reacting to one another. The director has chosen to do this because they want the viewer to see it from the perspective that they are seeing each other, making it far more realistic to watch. The lighting in this clip, is quite dull. this choice was made to emphasise that it is a bad memory. The director has been really clever with the way this music videos choices were made. The whole video was to give the viewer an insight on Taylor's life and to make the reader feel exactly what she felt through her ongoing life. Overall, this was extremely well done.

Lana Del Rey/ the weekend- lust for life

This music video is more of a performance/narrative video rather than just narrative, however they are set out in completely different ways. In all too well, the narrative was from Taylor's past, which included memories, and one of the directors choices was for someone else to play Taylor and Jake. This is because they are paid actors, and because it is a narrative style music video, they needed to make it more realistic to the audience about what was going on. In contrast, 'lust for life' is performed by Lana Del Rey and The Weekend themselves and it is leaning more towards a preformative music video, that is unneeded for other actors. The codes and conventions contrast quite a lot in this music video compared to the last one. For example, the lighting is very high saturated and bright as it is aiming to show a happier story line so the lighting is colourful. It stays the same the whole way through the music video, however sometimes it shines on lana and the weekend more than the surroundings, and sometimes the opposite. This all depends on if it is a significant part about them or not, as it highlights that it is important to the viewer and makes it more bold. This links into the sounds as when it gets slower, the lighting gets dimmer, this is so the viewer can feel emotion toward the love story that is happening. There are many different shot types in this music video that are there for many different reasons. The video as a whole starts off zooming out from Lana's face to capture how she feels at the beginning. In this scene, nothing intense has really happened so the lighting is very bright to capture the fact that the world is innocent. Throughout the music video, there is more wide angle shots than anything else. This is because the crew were wanting to capture the moments of the story line rather than the facial expressions and how the artists were actually reacting. One similarity in the two music videos is the target audience, I think that both were aimed at the same age range, from around 13yrs to 20/21 years which is quite a stretch but both are similar in that context, and both genres are the same as they are both slow songs.

Documentary

Documentary Production Diary : Pre-Production: We had to start our short documentary project by doing some research. We each researched a short documentary that caught our eye and watched them to see how they were put together. We then learned that there are three types of documentaries: Participatory, observational and expository. We looked into what each of these meant. This was all done in small tasks in groups or pairs over the course of a couple of lessons, whilst we also watched some examples of professional documentaries.  After we had a few lessons learning about documentaries, it was time to start thinking about our own. We first decided what type of documentary we wanted to make (mine was participatory/observational), and then choose a topic we enjoyed, to make it on. My first idea was to do with animals, I was thinking a puppy training class, or a puppies journey during this. However this was difficult as I needed many people's permission, which I failed to get, an...
